Today I am going to write about the places to visit in Shillong. Shillong is the Capital of Meghalaya, in India in the East Khasi Hills district. Meghalaya is located in far North-East India, a state blessed with natural beauty, churches, waterfalls, landscapes, caves, you name it with Cherrapunji, Mawsynram, and the cleanest village being the most popular ones.
There are quite a number of tourist spots in Shillong.
The distance from Guwahati to Shillong is about 100 km. To go to Shillong you will get shared taxis from the Airport or you can hire one for yourself. If you want to take the bus there is a bus service as well from Guwahati Airport to Shillong else you can get from the main Guwahati in Paltan Bazar.

1. Police Bazar:

I don’t know how it got this name as police bazaar but Police Bazar is the main hub and shopping center of Shillong with a large number of tourists visiting and shopping. One can find a number of shops and vendors on both sides of the road, selling a variety of goods from dress material, leather goods, winter wear, shoes, handicrafts, souvenirs including branded items. Besides, there are a number of hotels, restaurants, and eateries in the zone.
The market is in the Centre of the City and is worth visiting. Landmarks like the Meghalaya Assembly, High Court, and the Meghalaya Tourism or the Shillong Tourism offices are located here. It’s a good place to see the local scene and feel the place and the people. At a distance of around 700 meters, you will get the Wards Lake to hang around.

The state is undoubtedly blessed with many astonishing waterfalls and Elephanta Falls is one of them. This beautiful fallsis at a distance of around 5km from the city center. The fall has three stages and the final stage is to be the best one. This is so-called because there were elephant-shaped beautiful rock formations. Due to earthquakes that rock broke and the name persists. This place is a beauty of nature.

This place has enough place for parking and some shops with traditional items. This is one of the major attraction for tourists and also one of the best places to visit in Shillong.

3. Shillong Peak:

The peak is at a height of about 1970 m above sea level, Shillong Peak is the highest point in the upper Shillong area. You will be able to see breathtaking panoramic views of the entire city from here, also you can take a birds-eye view with the telescope available here. This location is also known as the Shillong view point and has stunning views of the whole town.

You can trek up to this peak to relish the amazing view of the entire Shillong. This place is truly mesmerizing and refreshing and is among the most exciting places to visit in Shillong.

The location is very well maintained, your mood will change with the freshness of the park when you just enter the park. There is also a mini zoo and the kids will surely enjoy it. Flowers are really beautiful and colorful, you can enjoy the vibrant colors of the flowers.

The pathways in the park are very comfortable and you can walk for a long time. You can sit down and rest if you are tired and want to take a rest. This is one of the locations to visit in Shillong.

6. Don Bosco Museum:

This is a curated museum of an artistic and fantastic collection of artifacts, paintings, and sculptures. You can even find earthenware and the evolution of the various cultures of the North Eastern People. The museum is of International standard with all the safety instructions and clear markings. This is of seven floors dedicated to all the North Eastern States displaying their culture, history, and customs. The place provides an impressive experience with facts and insights

The displays have been thoughtfully curated with a fantastic collection of artifacts, sculptures, paintings, earthenware, and varied inputs into the evolution and cultures of the North East tribes. The layout and design of the museum are in line with international standards with clear markings and safety instructions and exit points.

7. Sweet Falls:

Sweet Falls is one of the most mesmerizing and steepest waterfalls in the state, The location is around 4 to 5 km from the city center. The falls are about 315 feet and are considered very dangerous as well as a stunning waterfall.

The route to the waterfalls is very slippery and you can find pine trees on both sides of the road. On the way to the falls, you will hear the chirping of the birds.

8. Cathedral of Mary Help:

The Cathedral of Mary Help is one of the most beautiful places in Shillong. It is named after Mother Mary and is located at a distance of around 3 km from the city center. This place also houses the grave of the First Arch Bishop of Shillong. The church depicts the various artworks from the Holy Scriptures. Since the state is a Christian Majority State, there are many Churches this one of the most beautiful churches in the State and is one of the must-visit churches in Shillong.

9. Shillong Golf Course:

The Shillong Golf Course is one of the largest natural golf course. The golf course is surrounded by pine trees on a scenic valley. People also call this place ‘Gleneagles of the East’. This location is at a distance of 15 to 20 mins walk from the city center.

10. Wards Lake

One of the most popular tourist attractions Shillong, the Ward’s Lake, or the Pollock’s Lake is a synthetic lake inside the midst of enviable greenery, and in the center of the town.

The lake is named after Chief Commissioner of Assam, Sir William Ward, who started the plan for the establishment of this lake. It was later on constructed in 1894 by Colonel Hopkins. There is a wooden bridge from where you can enjoy the view of the Lake and you can feed fishes too and enjoy boating too. The lake is shaped like a horseshoe and you can walk on the cobble-stone path or simply admire the colorful garden.
